Furnace Installation: What to Expect

A furnace performs only as well as its installation and its match to your climate. This guide sets expectations using dated ENERGY STAR and U.S. Department of Energy sources.

A new furnace is a large purchase, and the quality of the install decides how much of its rated efficiency you actually get. The figures below come from dated ENERGY STAR and U.S. Department of Energy pages. Claims that could not be verified against a live source are left out.

Why Installation Quality Decides Your Real Efficiency

ENERGY STAR states that improper installation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30 percent. That means a high-AFUE furnace can behave like a much cheaper one if it is set up poorly.

ENERGY STAR also reports that sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of a heating and cooling system by as much as 20 percent. A good installer looks at the whole system, not just the furnace cabinet.

Before you focus only on the equipment rating, ask how the contractor will verify airflow, duct sealing, and gas setup. Those steps protect the efficiency you paid for.

Matching the Furnace to Your Climate

The Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program sets the ENERGY STAR level at 90 percent AFUE for the Southern region and 95 percent AFUE for the Northern region. A good installer helps you pick the right efficiency band for where you live.

The DOE FEMP guidance covers natural gas, propane, and oil-fired furnaces with heating capacities under 225,000 Btu per hour. Sizing to the home rather than oversizing is part of a proper install.

ENERGY STAR notes that a Northern-region certified gas furnace can save about $160 in energy costs each year, while a Southern-region unit can save about $60. Climate shapes both the target AFUE and the payback.

Gas, Electrical, and Combustion Setup

A furnace install includes the fuel and electrical connections that make it run safely. ENERGY STAR's maintenance guidance says a contractor should check all gas or oil connections, gas pressure, burner combustion, and the heat exchanger. Expect your installer to verify these on the new unit.

ENERGY STAR also notes that improper gas or oil connections are a fire hazard and can contribute to health problems, and that faulty electrical connections can cause unsafe operation and reduce the life of major components. These checks are safety items, not extras.

Ask your installer to walk you through the combustion and connection checks before they leave. Getting these right at install prevents problems later.

Efficiency Tiers and What They Cost to Run

The Department of Energy's FEMP page lists a less-efficient furnace at 80 percent AFUE, the ENERGY STAR level at 90 to 95 percent depending on region, and the best available at 99 percent AFUE. Knowing these tiers helps you read a quote.

Over a 21-year life against the 80 percent baseline, DOE FEMP estimates a Northern ENERGY STAR furnace saves about $1,345 and a best-available model about $1,635. In the South those figures are about $549 and $947.

The Department of Energy also finalized a standard requiring at least 95 percent AFUE for residential gas furnaces starting in late 2028. Buying at or above that level future-proofs the install.
